Liam has developed a love-hate relationship with animals. He's facinated by them but doesn't want them to get too close or make eye contact. Case in point - when we went to the farm last weekend, he was thrilled to see a llama - who was on the backside of the pen with its back to us - until it raised its head and turned toward us. Liam got nervous, trying to run away even though I was holding him, saying "no mama (llama)." In order to alleviate his fear, I explained that the llama was in a pen and had to stay there. That didn't seem to help so I tried to reinforce the message by saying "no worries." He repeated the phrase, "no wowwies," at every pen we visited even though he continued to be a nervous nellie.
Tonight, we visited Mut-maw (great grandma) and her cat, Weezie. Liam was, again, very interested in the cat but became a nervous wreck when the cat looked his direction or moved. He even admitted to being "scawed" (scared). After Weezie ran under the bed never to be seen again, Liam continued to obsess although at one point he turned to me and said "cat, bye bye, no wowwies."

Good times
We had a great weekend! We hit the zoo and Parky's Farm for our animal fix. We went to three cookouts with LOTS of other kiddos and we went to a Memorial Day parade this morning. Liam is at such a great age where being with him makes everything seem amazing, fun, and facinating.
The animals at the zoo and farm were both scary and mezmorizing (especially the llama and wolves). Being with other toddlers was a blast! Liam got to chase, wrestling, ignore, and love on lots of kids. I had fun trying to teach several of the 2-year-olds how to play Red Light Green Light and Duck Duck Goose. I had little success but a lot of fun trying! The parade this morning was so much fun with Liam. He loved the marching bands and honking cars but the best part, of course, were the firetrucks and police cars with their flashing lights. Every time a new one came around the corner he would point and say "ooohhhh!!" It was a wonderful weekend!

Imagination: A Few Stories
Liam is obsessed with trucks, as many little boys are. He now knows the names of most trucks - fire, dump, mail, brown (UPS), etc. so I've been forced to expand our conversation. On our way home a few weeks ago I asked Liam what he thought was IN the trucks. He took a minute to think about about then resolutely said "trees." Huh? Not sure where that came from. The next few trucks contained milk and dirt.
Last weekend, Liam and I were sitting on the porch eating breakfast, gazing out the window. Liam then turned to me a said "peacock." Here is the rest of the conversation:
Me: Liam, you saw a peacock?
Liam: Yea
Me: Where is the peacock?
L: Outside
Me: Is it big or little (thinking maybe he saw another type of bird)
L: Big
Me: Was it a boy or a girl peacock?
L: Boy
Me: Liam, I don't see the peacock, where did it go?
L: Bye bye
Another new favorite game is to pretend to 'eat' things out of books. He'll pretend to pick up an item, put his fingers in his mouth, and chew it up. It started with the blueberries in our Curious George book about blueberry pancakes. Now it has progressed to munching on the hamster in the animal book and the caterpillar from The Hungry Caterpillar. I think he moved on to the hamster and caterpillar because it grosses Mom out. Of course, I'm happy to encourage his giggles with some fake gagging and 'eewwws!"

The Cold Shoulder
A couple weeks ago I asked Liam for a hug. He turned is body away from me, peeked over his one shrugged shoulder and said "no!" very emphatically. Even when I've tried to sneak in a kiss while he's in the carseat, strapped down, he leans away as far as possible saying "no mama." In the last two weeks, he's given the cold shoulder to two of his teachers when they asked for a kiss. Can this be the end of my sweet loving boy?
Not quite. Yesterday I asked him for a hug and at first he resisted but then reached up and gave me a huge bear hug. He then leaned away from me, offered his cheek and very coyly said "kiss?"
